Andrea Long Chu

July 16, 2021

Andrea Long Chu is an American writer and critic. There’s no one more exacting in their writing than Chu: she says what she means and means what she writes. It was my distinct pleasure to think in real time with someone so relentless in the act of pursuing questions that are sometimes just out of reach. Before our interview I assumed she was either a Leo or a Gemini—it turns out she’s a Scorpio, born November 8, 1992. (Afterward, we laughed that no one had ever asked.)

Whether you believe in astrology or not, this conversation showcases a commitment to one’s craft: to have an idea and execute it with precision, even when it risks discomfort or misreading. The world—and sometimes culture—can be unrelenting, but Chu is among those who move through it with clarity, studying the conditions that shape us before claiming the terms by which they are seen. We spoke through and around her first book of nonfiction Females (2019), along with other goings on in her life, to take the temperature of where she’s been, how she’s doing, and what she wants next for herself. This conversation took place in July 2021.
