Howardena Pindell

November 26, 2020

Howardena Pindell studied painting at Boston University and Yale University in the 1960s and then worked a variety of curatorial jobs at the Museum of Modern Art, where she remained for twelve years. In 1972, Pindell co-founded A.I.R. Gallery, the first artist-run space for women in the United States. In 1979, she began teaching at the State University of New York, Stony Brook, where she is a full professor. Throughout her long career, Pindell has exhibited extensively. I have also long admired her work as an author, activist, and researcher. Her reflective solo exhibition, “Howardena Pindell: Rope/Fire/Water,” is on view at The Shed in New York until April 11, 2021 and features several new pieces that we discuss below. The interview was conducted in November 2020.
