Nora Turato

Nora Turato is an artist and graphic designer based in Amsterdam. As a teenager, she uploaded soundscapes to her Myspace profile—some layered with recordings of her own voice. Later, when she enrolled at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie, she sold all her sound equipment, intending to pursue a more pragmatic path in graphic design. But for her thesis project, she created a video work narrated in her own voice. A friend encouraged her to perform the script live, marking the beginning of a performance practice that now runs parallel to her sculptural installations and wall paintings.

Turato’s work blurs the boundaries between language, sound, performance, and image. She plays with the velocity and volatility of contemporary communication—sampling slogans, tweets, headlines, and fragments of speech into meticulously choreographed monologues. Her interest lies in the limits of control and meaning, how language breaks down under pressure, and how identity is performed through style and repetition. Recent presentations include pool 5 at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, govern me harder at David Zwirner’s 52 Walker, and poor babies so scared of themselves and others at Galerie Gregor Staiger in Zürich. Her current installation, it’s not true!!! stop lying!, is on view at Sprüth Magers in Los Angeles through April 27, 2024. This conversation took place in September 2022.
